HAPPY NEW YEAR! January 1, a fresh start, a new beginning, full of possibilities and excitement. And what better way to celebrate than by casting on a new project! However, unlike most resolutions, this one requires a bare minimum of commitment, just 2 lines of knitting each day. This is a simple relief designed dishcloth, (knits and purl stitches), and the pattern starts very quickly after the border and continues up the entire cloth. If you are new here Welcome, if you are returning, welcome back, let’s get started!
How it works –
Come back to THIS post every day through January, and I’ll add two additional rows to the pattern, listing the new rows under the date they are posted. Don’t worry if you miss a day, I will just add the rows, never remove them. **You may find it helpful to bookmark thedomesticdash.com, so you can find your way back!**
Use any worsted weight cotton yarn you like, (but a solid color will show up the design better).
Knit so that you create a ‘firm’ fabric, to really show off the relief stitches. For most of you, this will be a size 7 needle. If you like a smaller dishcloth try using a dk weight cotton and a size 5 needle.
Just for fun, if/when you have a guess as to the design, leave a comment, the FIRST person to guess correctly will win a prize from The Quarter Stitch in Wilmington, NC!
HERE WE GO! Good Luck!
Cast on 41 stitches.
Row 1 – *(K1, P1), repeat from * across the row, end K1.
Row 2 – *(K1, P1), repeat from * across the row, end K1.

Happy new years
Got it started! Happy New Year’s to each of you!
Back for a new month. Going white this time. The obvious guess would be snowflake, snowman, 2014. Looking forward to the surprises as we go along!
I am also back….look forward to this Claire….such a fun thing to do.:)
Appreciate all your time…thanks:)
Hi! I’ll guess a champagne glass. Happy new year!
Thank you so much for posting this and doing this! I found your post via Ravelry! I am an uber beginner and this will be a terrific project for me and the pace that I need as well! Thank you again and HAPPY NEW YEAR! 😀
I’m back as well……..and a VERY Happy and prosperous New Year to one and all.
And to you Marlena!! Glad you are back!
Happy New Year Claire and all. It’s silly to guess already but I’ll do it-a heart maybe? Valentine’s is right around the corner. Stay warm. It’s frigid here in Wisconsin.
Yea!! Happy New Year to all…hope you had great holidays!
Now, more fun begins, thanks to Claire.
I have a question..Because I have leftover balls of cotton yarn,
and also, just want to try this…can I do the pattern in two colors?
Ie, cloth in white, “object” in red. What do you think? Thanx.
Start it in one color, and I’ll tell you when to switch Miss.Dixie!
I’m back and ready for some fun. Happy New Year all.
Hi Claire, Blessing for the Happiest New Year for You and Your Family. The best of life to You and Yours. Thanks to You and Them for sharing you and your time. Hope you enjoy all you endeavor. Have a beautiful day today. Sheryl
I’m going light blue. Hope it’s not a valentine. Happy New Year, all.
hi everyone..glad to be back and can’t wait to see what this month holds for us..good luck to all of us..try to stay warm..it is cold here in anderson, south carolina, well cold to me anyway..i’m sure not as cold as it is where some of you are at..guessing maybe a heart for valentines
I’m new here and can’t wait to get started. I’ll be knitting mine in a medium blue, so I’ll guess a star. Gorgeous in western WY.
I am new to this. I have my first 2 rows finished. Can’t wait for the next ones. I am using a bright orange yarn. My guess is Diamonds.
Oh my, wild guessing already?? Well, I know what it is!!! It’s a seed stitch border and now, a base of something…lol. Now, don’t get your knickers in a twist..just a bit of ribbing! Oh, did I really say ribbing? Sorry ’bout that…I’d better get out of here while I can…See you around the corner…Dixie
Oh boy more fun this month. Happy New Year everyone. Love doing these.
Glad to be doing another mystery dish cloth. This is fun and such a delight to see something take shape each day with new rows added. I really love doing this. Happy New Year everyone and happy knitting.
Happy New Year! I’m back and ready to dig in. Blessings to all. Snowy & cold here in Northern IL.
Happy New Year! I’m new to this, but it looks like fun and I’ll be a regular! Thanks for the fun!
Jumping in to say hi to everyone – Happy New Year to you all. I’m finding a good way to keep warm is to keep those needles flying and what better way to go than to build on a riddle ?
I’m in. I got the first 6 rows done and waiting for more. 😉
Happy New Year from Louisiana. I haven,t a clue what it is and that makes it even more fun. Thank you for taking the time to do this for us, I for one appreciate it.
Was pleasantly surprised to find rows 5 &6 up, when I only expected to find 3 & 4. Finally a KAL pattern that I might be able to keep up with. No guesses on a pattern from me, only hoping that it will go well with my pretty toffee coloured cotton.
I’m back as well. I’m caught and will not guess at this time. Happy New Years to you all. Try to stay warm it’s chilly in NW Montana.
Karren
Good evenig from Southwest Florida going back home to a very cold Montreal tomorrow night.
Claire, is there a theme that could head us to the right direction?
Happy New Year to all.
Happy New Year to all,,did last month, looking forward to seeing what this one turns out to be…maybe fireworks,
Found your link thru a friend and love this. I have an injury that made me put away the needles a couple of years ago but with only 2 rows a day, I can manage it and look forward to each day!!!
Question, my mother always would knit into the back of the first stitch saying that it made a neater edge. Do you recommend this, or should I be doing the same?
I am a new kniter but love to knit dish cloths.
My friends love dishcloths and I am always looking for new ones. Cannot wait to see what is it.
So excited — I’ve wanted to start one of your dishcloths from the beginning and finally get the opportunity to do so! Will be starting this pattern this afternoon! Happy New Years!
I am excited to start a new mystery. my daughter-in-law loved getting last months dish cloth. It is too early for me to guess. Happy new year everyone.
I’m in again on this one. Happy New Year to all. I was taking Christmas tree down when I thought about this so had to take time to check it out and get started. Cold NWPA this morning -4. But sunny and that helps
Just found out about your site and KAL on Knitting Paradise. I love knitting dishcloths so count me in too. We have bright sunshine here today in central Ohio. There is snow on the ground and the temperature here is 12 degrees. My husband is out playing with his snowblower. *s*
I know what it is–it’s a dishcloth!
Like Bonnie, I heard about you on Knitting Paradise and took a peek. Looks like fun and will be joining you all. Nancy, that is funny!
Hope every one has a Happy New Year! I’m new here and just a few months into knitting so this is perfect for me too! I love the anticipation! And I have found a neighbor already – Hi Marjorie, I’m from Louisiana too! Thanks Claire for sharing!
Happy New Year! I will guess a sleigh.
What a fun way to pass these cold, Winter days….thanks for brightening the New Year!!
Please keep me posted what the next rows will be after Rows 1-6 .
Thank you.
Shirley
Hi Shirley! You will find the next 2 lines right on this post every day!
So glad to be doing this again. Happy New Year to all. Thank you Claire for doing this again this year.
I am back for the second month because It was so much fun in December. A wonderful surprise for me and for Jan who received it as a gift. Love looking forward to each day and new pattern.
Found out about this through Ravelry. I’m a thrower trying to teach herself to knit and purl continental so this is perfect! Thanks for doing this!
Looking forward to another mystery this cold month of January..
Hmmm, I think this is starting to look like a house. Just thought I would throw out a wild guess:)
I have made oodly gobs of dishcloths and am intrigued with mystery dishcloth idea. Am joining in and looking forward to each day of knitting a few rows and guessing the end result. Awesome!!!
So far so good. -:)).
Have a great day
My very first KAL and am enjoying it very much! Here goes for my first of probably many……….a rabbit sitting on it’s haunches?
This is my first KAL and I love it. Happy New Year to all! This is great fun.
Knitting the new rows and wondering how this KAL started? Are the patterns originals? Who designs them? Admire anyone the ability to do that. Have another guess- shoe, a high heeled shoe? Having fun as are so many others doing these dishcloths. Thank you.
Hi Noreen! I’ll give you the short version, I own a yarn shop with my mother in Wilmington, NC, and I’m always trying to come up with ideas to keep knitters knitting! The patterns are all original, and are designed by two dear friends and me. I am so thrilled at how popular the KAL’s have become, but I really think we have more fun coming up with the new designs! We have about 5 done for this year so far! Enjoy!
im stumped on this one..i was gonna say the number 14 at first, but changed my mind on that one.will have to wait for more clues..love this kal…hope everyone is staying warm..its cold here in sc..calling for cold weather down in single digits tomorrow night..we dont usually get this kind of weather..but it’s good knitting weather..
Well I’m stumped as well. Need a few more clues. This is so much fun.
I’m guessing either a barn or a schoolhouse.
Late, but here are. Returned this morning from vacation in NYC, Okay, only my right shoulder is giving me problems for the pain. But do not give up on this Kal and friendship around the world. Happy New Year to all from Italy and a big ciao.
Maybe a church. Just came from there so it was stuck in my mind.
Oh wait, maybe baby new year or Father Time:)
My first KAL Having fun with it.. I guess an elephant , I know sounds crazy an elephant in the kitchen
A dishcloth that says HAPPY NEW YEAR.
Never did anything like this before.I think it is great fun.look forward to new postings. It is like sharing a secret with a lot of friends.
Happy New Year to Claire and all of our mystery dishcloth knitters! Just returned home from a visit with my very pregnant daughter in Fort Leavenworth. She’s due on valentine’s Day. Next month I will be knitting in blue as I THINK she is having a little boy. This is my second month knitting the mystery dishcloth. At this point in time it looks to be rectangular shapes.
Blue will be perfect for next month! Congratulations!!
I was thinking a house, but today when the pattern changed, I changed to the number 14
I did last month’s dishcloth and am now doing this one. I have a cone of cotton that I really think keeps going and going. I have made several dishclothes from this cone of just different crochet stitches and I still have a huge amount left. I think this is a house with a window and possibly a chimney will be on top with smoke rolling out.
I’m thinking it is looking like a barn.
Hi….I think maybe it’s gonna be letters or numbers….maybe 14…hmmmm
Started watching Downton Abby again…..so addictive…lol…thought about a teapot
But I’m not thinking so much now…….:-)
I am such a Downton Abby FAN! They packed alot into that first one!
Yes…they did….barrows is up to his ol self again…lol…wish I had ordered the bbc one….hate the waiting….augh!!!…still think it’s 14:)
I’m guessing the numbers for this year: 2014 🙂
I think it is going to be a teddy bear
I think it’s numerical 2014
hey claire,
i know it’s early in the kal,but is anyone close to the correct answer yet?..love the kal..good way to get christmas started without even thinking about it..thanks again..
Hi Karen, I hate to give it away so early!! But this one is going to go fast!
Yep, it is starting to look numerical. Looks like 2014 is right.
I’m enjoying the knit along. I’m up to date with the pattern. No guesses yet.
im still thinking 14..that’s what hit me a few days ago and not sure why but can’t get it out of my head..
I got it – we’re working it sideways and it’s a guy lifting barbells! 🙂
happy new year, love that this keeps me guessing.
Where is more of the pattern? I’m looking so forward to this one. The pattern could be 2014, maybe.
Awwww, there it is. I still think its going to be 2014.
If your looking at it sideways so far it looks like and letter H. Underneath, I don’t know. Maybe for home.
The number 14.
I am not very good at guessing but I am sure enjoying this pattern. It is very nice to knit up and I don’t usually do two rows at a time. It is nice to sit and do two rows a day.
Hi I’m a newbie also. I have knitted dish/wash cloths before but realized I didn’t have any of my own. So when I saw this posted I decided to give it a try 🙂 I have lots of cotton so I have several months before I even need to think of buying more. Thank you for your time and effort.. its so very valuable and appreciated
Thank you so much for hosting this KAL! Its the first one I have ever participated in, and its really fun. I’d have to agree with the others…looks like its shaping up to be a 14 to me. 🙂
Snowed in for days. Cannot wait until you post the next two rows.
How about I <3 U
I love making these dishcloths, its so nice to think lots of lovely knitters are making them at the same time.Thank you Claire for sharing.
This intrigues me more and more..ergo, “a riddle”.
I’ll guess a flag…or a book or a maze.
Definitely a “14” although I know it’s already been guessed!
okay…I am now going to go with the majority as well and say it is looking more like the number 14 now!!!!
ok i am definitely sticking with my original guess and saying 14..now hope it is right…lol
hope everyone is staying warm…happy knitting and love this kal
I think it’s going to say “I <3" something–like "2 knit"
Definitely in agreement with many previous posters. It’s a 14! I’m loving this dishcloth KAL. And my brother is too… he’s short on dishcloths right now, so I’m working on two of them, and he’s getting one.
For me is the date of February 14, S. Valentine. A big ciao to all.
Pretty nice so far. Thinking “14”
I too think it is the number 14
Love knitting all different dish clothes to sell at craft shows in Sask. Canada.
It sure is a riddle, so far, but now I’m guessing the word “knit”.
Hee hee, how fun! Guessed twice already and still not sure. Patience!
I’m new to this mystery KAL. I remembered about it last night and realized i was 10 days behind. So this morning while everyone was sleeping (7am), i decided i would join in on the fun and catch up. So i am going to guess… i think it’s spelling a word. I wonder what tomorrow brings…..
It’s the log cabin knit dish cloth pattern.
Is it the log cabin knit dishcloth pattern?
Vonda, I think you’re right…that’s what mine looks like, too.
i think its the log cabin
Am I the only Australian working on this puzzle?
I know it is very cold in the US right now, but spare a thought for me. It was 102* F., in my computer room last week. Cooled down a bit now, – to 92* F.
I have no idea what the puzzle is, but I’m working on it. 14 seems logical, for the New Year.
So far, so good. I’m sticking along with you. By the way this is my first KAL. I’m enjoying the fun. Like the mystery of what we are creating. 🙂
I agree with those that see the 14 but I think it is going to be 2014 with the 20 on top of the 14.
A thought to Edna: i will be there now! Sure my rheumatic pains disappear. Returned from NYC with a cold never tried. The northern Italy with her -8° Celsius seems my almost……….Australia (maybe!). I’m always thinking of a calendar page with the date of the day of S.Valentine, February 14. Ciao.
I’m going along with the other 14 guesses. Mine will be bright yellow to remind me that the sun will be out for us to see…eventually.
I agree with Vicki , I think it is a 2014.
Maybe a heart on top and 14 on the bottom for valentines day?
Number 14 I think
After those two rows it is definantly 2014!!!
I think top line is Jan followed by 14.
This is so much fun. For sure the “14” is there but the other thoughts now of “20” or “Jan” or a” heart” above it is making me wonder about the possibilities. The mystery isn’t over yet! Here we are at the 12th of the month already. Doesn’t this mystery just help make the time move along!
How about the ball dropping and 14?
Yeah, I finally see the 14 , Jan or 20 should be on the top. That’s my guess for now.
Going to guess crosses or possibly checkerboard. Not very good at guessing things. Just a wild guess. But am enjoying doing these.
I am a new knitter also. A friend told me about this KAL today and I sat down tonite and got all caught up. This is so much fun seeing the pattern reveal itself. Can’t wait to get the next installment. Also love it comes in nice small increments.
It is 2014. I’m pleased to get this pattern.
I agree with Vonda. 20 is on the top and 14 is on the bottom of the dishcloth.
What a mystery…fun to knit without a mental picture of what it’s supposed to be! So far mine also looks like a log cabin design…maybe I have a wrong row or stitch somewhere(very possible)…. Anyway….knit on and keep guessing.
Hiya, I have been following along and I look forward to a new one each month.
So a cross and church pews or cross and cradle, cross and basket, cross and church building.too earlly to see fun working with mystery images.
Hi, I am loving this idea of not knowing the pattern while I am knitting.
It makes me pay attention, I can usually guess but then my mind wonders
so following a pattern keeps me focus
Bernice
Attention KP’ers on here. Did you see the post yesterday under Chit-Chat showing
the answer to mystery dishcloth? Mine doesn’t look like that, but I was shocked to see it, and noticed it is mystery, not riddle. Then I found out there has been a Kal of d’cloths going on for awhile. Almost the same but not quite.
I never check those, just read the daily newsletter. Just wondering if you have seen it.
I am just NOT seeing a 4 on mine (maybe I’ll stand across the room and look),
so I’m guessing I (heart)U.
Yes I did see that post on knitting paradise..and wondered about it. As far as this dishcloth it is a one and a four (don’t forget there are two different ways of making a “4”…
I stand to be corrected I forgot the Roman Numeral IV also so that’s (3) ways in the USA..
i just found about this mystery knit at my local knitting group. when i heard of it, it reminded me of the little boy on the Christmas story getting his decoder out and listening for the secret message. i’m excited to participate. great idea. thanks.
How about ” I (with a heart) U 2014″.
still believe just the number 14…lol…love all the guesses…it’s amazing what everyone can see….i just love this site…
Just stumbled on this over the weekend… Started it on the 12th and I’m now caught up… Not seeing the final is tricky for me especially since I’m a new knitter… But looking forward to finishing it 🙂
Thanks for the fun
How about 14 on the top and 14 on the bottom? The top 14 in knit and the bottom 14 in purl.
i think it will be 20 on top and 14 on the bottom.
I’m thinking it’s I <3 at the top and 14 at the bottom – especially with this latest row having a very small bit above the obvious 4 and just finishing up the 1 – there's not a lot of space left in the pattern for anything large above the 1 on the left, and just enough to eek out a heart above the 4 – still wondering what it's going to look like in the end – execution is interesting. Love it Claire! thanks again…..
actually, another thought just hit – it could be 2 <3 14 like 2014 with a heart for the 0……I think that would make most sense 🙂
20 on top 14 pn bottom
20 on top 14 on the bottom
When I try to post a guess I get an error from WordPress saying it is a duplicate comment. Trying using the reply to get a post up. Anyone else having this problem? Anyway guessing 2014 also.
How about a champagne flute or top hat over the 14?
Have to agree with the 20 on top and 14 on bottom votes.
Have to agree with Karen 2014
Looks like 2014 to me
When I try to post a guess I keep getting an error from WordPress that it is a duplicate comment. Anyone else having that problem?
Weird took the reply and then posted all previous comment attempts. Gotta love technology.
Thanks everyone making the patterns. so faar 14… maybe Feb. 14, /or it is going to be 2014. having fun knitting anyway.
14 so far Also thought could be 2 14 14. working on several knitting projects. on these cold nights.
I have been in the knitting mode tonight, working on several pieces. Just wanted to finish them. I was at the yarn shop today and saw some new needles and yarn that was perfect for my new projects. It is exciting to see all the new things in the shop. Looking forward to knitting along with the projects every month. The dishcloth is 14 on bottom so it will probably be 20 on top. Or my next guess is 2 14 14 for Valentines. Calling it a night. plenty of time to knit tomorrow.
I now think it is 20 with 14 beening under that 20
14 like so.
Anita
Did we lose a row? it goes from ROW 37 to ROW 39??????
I have been off for 3 days and I noticed Row 38 is missing or perhaps miss marked. Claire please advise use asap. Carol
I agree with Miss Dixie and do not see a “4”.
Hope I’m right ..to all who noticed error in row count. If you go ahead and work row 39 as 38 it will be fine. And now I see the edge of 2014, so it appears the winner was back on the 6th. Wow
I am a huge football “freak” so from here on it’s excitement today, except for one thing…The second game will run into Downton Abbey time…what a choice to have to make!!! See y’all ’round the corner…Dixie
Please give us the whole pattern SOON. Need for a gift. Thanks.
I’m still keeping up with the pattern of 2014 dish cloth. It really looks great. I’m using a white cotton yarn. 🙂
I am having fun doing the dishclothes. Could this be a number two next to a heart on the top and 14 on the bottom.
I am thinking that it is not a 0 or a heart next to the 2 but I can’t figure out what it would be… (The “0” just looks a little off to me right now)
With out any doubt 2014 this is so much fun
Congrats Elizabeth! That yarn sure is pretty! 🙂
WOW! I am so excited. I love the color of the yarn and look forward to knitting with it. I have only made 2 pairs of socks. This will be used for my third pair. I can’t wait to get it! Thank you! Thank you!
Brava, Elizabeth! Congratulations of your win. I’m glad to have shared with you and with all the other people an’ another of these wonderful experiences proposed by Claire. A warm greeting to all of you. Ciao.
Congrats! I can’t wait til next month.
Now that you told us for sure what it is, you might as well give us the rest of the rows instead of putting 2 rows down a day.
Congratulations to the winner..post a picture of the finished item so we can enjoy it too…
Will do!

Thank you Claire for sharing your time and talents, this was the first KAL I’ve done, and it has been a ball scrambling to the computer to see if the next two rows were up, and if I could figure out what it was! 🙂 Can’t wait for the next one!
Claire
Really enjoy and look forward to the next rows everyday. Very cold here in western PA. So knitting is a good way to pass the time. Thanks so much and looking forward to the next riddle.
Could we use varigated for February? Anita
I wouldn’t, unless it is VERY subtle.
Thanks, again, Claire! As before, this is one of “my favorite things”. It is fun and sure teaches us patience, too. Please post a picture of “2014”. The perfectionist in me needs to see where I ‘goofed’ on the 4 and the 0.
Best wishes to you and your family and to all participants. Carpe diem!! Dixie
It’s up!
awesome job – thanks so much Claire, looking forward to next week and February!
Thank you for the nice dish cloth and the fun of making this. I enjoyed the adventure every morning before I went to work. 🙂

Thanks Claire for sharing your talent. Looking forward to joining others to do the next mystery dish cloth. See you next month.
Claire,
Thank you for another great dishcloth pattern. Knitting like this is fun and produces a wonderful product.
Thanks, Claire! Making washcloths for a Family Reunion we are having in July.
So…no pink. That leads me to believe that February’s pattern will be something for the men/love interests in our lives.
I missed a couple of days. Could you put dates that they were put on line for the last 4 days please?
Sure!
Thank you! The dates helped me as well! 🙂
Very happy that you are starting again in Feb – this has been a lot of fun!! Thank you.
Than you SO much Claire! I had a wonderful time and am looking for ward to the next KAL for February. Do we use a solid or variegated yarn to best show the pattern this time? Thanks again ever so much for being the gentle push I needed to keep trying to KNIT! *HUGS* 😀
Whoops! I just saw the comments above. I will find a pretty solid…NO PINK! 😉
YES! Mine looks just like that (patting self on back). I’m tickled “coral” in this case. Sure thought I had goofed. Have chosen color for Saturday morning….bring it on, Claire! Eagerly anticipating the challenge and fun. Thanks! Dixie…freezing in Florida….believe me, I feel for y’all in the really frigid areas. Hope it will soon be over. Stay safe. Love ya’
Thank you ever so much Claire for the wonderful mystery dishcloth. I am really pleased with mine.

Will this website automatically change to the February pattern?
Riddle Me This- February
Hello, Claire…Claire, Claire, where are you? You have spoiled me
and I sit here poised with pen and paper and no February riddle!!
It is my first “go to” each morning when firing up the computer and
I’m just over-anxious for the next cloth. Hope all is ok with you…I’ll
just have to be more patient. Love you, gal. Dixie
Sorry for the delay Miss. Dixie! I have been in bed for 3 days batteling a NASTY cold. But it’s up now!
Looking forward to another surprising month…thank you for posting your finished photo of Januarys’ mystery dishcloth..
Thank you for January, I can’t wait to see what February brings. I wonder if it will be a shamrock??? I’m using mint green yarn, just in case. 🙂
(((HUGS)))
Thanks for the pattern. I cannot wait for the next pattern =)
I finished now two things this year =)
Okay… I have the 2,0 and part of the 1 and 4 then half way through the numbers 1 and four something went wrong. It looks off… like the bottom of the 1 is with the four and bottom of the four is with the one. Anyone else have that problem???
