My watch says its the 31st, and it’s been a lazy, sunny summer day……… but it’s not the 31st, it’s July 1st! No time to be lazy, it’s time to start a new dishcloth. This month I’ve got a cute one, it’s sweet and simple and very summer-y. At least South-eastern North Carolina summers!! Also we have a special prize for this months winner, you want to win this one! I’ll tell you all about it soon, Happy July!
Come back to THIS post every day through July, and I’ll add two additional rows to the pattern, listing the new rows under the date they are posted. Don’t worry if you miss a day, I will just add the rows, never remove them. **You may find it helpful to bookmark thedomesticdash.com, so you can find your way back!**
Use any worsted weight cotton yarn you like, (but a solid color will show up the design better).
Knit so that you create a ‘firm’ fabric, to really show off the relief stitches. The tighter you knit the cloth, the more the design will POP! For most of you, this will be a size 6 or 7 needle. If you like a smaller dishcloth try using a dk weight cotton and a size 5 needle.
Just for fun, if/when you have a guess as to the design, leave a comment, the FIRST person to make an exact guess will win a prize from The Quarter Stitch in Wilmington, NC! Good Luck!

July 25- And the winner is Nancy! Yes, it’s a frog! Here in SENC we usually have very rainy summers and the frogs are so loud at night sometimes I feel like they are on the roof outside our bedroom window! The three dots at the bottom are just to round out the design, after we started I realized that they would confuse everyone, but if I’d done this one top down it would have been guessed much quicker I suspect! Congratulations Nancy, and your prize? A really beautiful custom knitting bag made by my dear friend Miranda.
We have been selling her bags as quickly as she can make them in the shop, and she has started selling them on Etsy as well. All her bags are double-faced and loaded with pockets, for knitters by a knitter, you can check out more of her designs at her etsy shop, WhimsicalBags . Without further ado, UPDATE- Officially Ginette was the first to guess, as many of you noted, I missed her guess on the 14th. I have corrected my error and will send out 2 prizes this month. (I really wish I could play Oprah and send one of Miranda’s fab bags to each of you!!!) 🙂
Row 49- K1, P1, K11, P2, K2, P2, K3, P2, K2, P2, K11, P1, K1.
Row 50- K1, P1, K1, P11, K4, P5, K4, P11, K1, P1, K1.

Bind Off.
(My family and I are leaving tomorrow for a much needed summer vacation, we’ll be back on the 1st, but too late I suspect, to post the August cloth. I’ll get it up on the 2nd, but those of you who like to stay on schedule, cast on 41 and seed stitch 2 rows! 🙂 )
I just discovered that I have used all the solid colors in my stash several times, I need to go and get a new color. Thank you so much for the fun you give me each day. I wish you and your family a safe and happy 4th of July.
Summery? Beach umbrella…flipflops…a beach ball.. the sun.. A sunflower….bucket and shovel…sandcastle
Deck hair …..ice cold drink in a glass…a sunhat
Oh boy! A new RMT cloth! What color to use? I have many colors from which to choose and cannot decide. Guess it will be a solid color. Time to go through my supply and pick one. Maybe hot pink, or turquoise or yellow, or… Shucks, I don’t know. Found some cool red, white and blue varigated, but everyone says solids are best for these patterns. Maybe I will find a red or white. We shall see! It is summer here, with temps in the low 90’s during the day and 70’s at night. Lovin’ it! We are summer children at my house. No rain for several days, so the humidity is down. Getting back to normal. Claire, I cannot tell you how much I enjoy your monthly kal. Thanks again!
Since it is August, how about a pair of sunglasses or a palm tree. A hut on the beach, or a beach scene with seagulls. We shall see!
Maybe a lighthouse?
A pitcher of sweet tea or a bottle of soda pop..just the right thing to quench a thirst on a Summers day! Looking forward to this months’ RMT~
I am going to be completely open minded till I see a clue. When I didn’t find email on the first
I prayed we were not having a month’s vacation. this am. Using a pretty salmon color.
Maybe( going fishing).
Annbeth
Hi everyone! I’m finally able to rejoin and do this month’s cloth! Thanks Claire that you don’t take off a month like some of us do once in awhile. With my daughter’s wedding I was too busy and then just got too far behind so now I’m back. My guesses would be an instrument from a parade for the 4th, a bicycle, a porch swing, a tent for camping, flowers in a garden or even veggies in a garden, a dog for the dog days of summer but you could even do a cat on a porch, fireworks, an ice cream cone, the guesses can be endless even if summer isn’t endless. I have no idea what North Carolina summers are like. Here in northern Illinois it’s mostly in the 70’s with some 80’s and still having more rain than normal for this time of year. At least I don’t have to water the yard! Oh, could it be a hose or sprinkler!? I certainly missed all of this fun and am glad I’m back each day!
How about a sailboat on the water!
Deck chair….beach towel
An ice cream cone
How about a glass with a straw with ice cubes in it. Maybe a drink with one of those cute umbrellas adorning it. Oh, my first item description should have the glass having a liquid in it like iced tea. LOL
Picnic scene—–blanket with picnic basket. Baseball with a bat. Baseball type hat. Sandbucket and scoop or shovel on the beach.
Claire, Have a great 4th of July!
How about a musical instrument, a band stand ot grand stand or theater stage?
How about a beach cover, tent.
Happy Independence Day!! Hope you all enjoy the day, family and friends! Keep safe.
At the beach, the waves on the ocean
Umm, a firecracker ?
A snow cone?
Decided to use yellow yarn for this one. Maybe it is a hammock tied between two poles or trees to represent the lazy days of summer. Hope everyone had a grand July 4th celebration. Our little Texas town had a fantastic fireworks display that lasted a good 45 minutes. It was awesome! My poor outdoor kitties did not appreciate it at all and 3 of 6 did not show up to eat. Thankfully, they were all in attendance this morning for breakfast. Knit on!
I think this RMT is perhaps some stars! We shall see! This is so much fun!
possibly flowers? maybe 3 stars across the bottom or maybe stars around the whole edge..I chose ecru for my color this month and I like simple..gives my brain a rest.. 🙂
Could it be something for a county fair like banners, rides, tickets, sign for the fair, game booth, cotton candy, fireworks, prize ribbons?
My guess is a hammock..they are made either in SC or NC..I have spent many a day on a hammock swing..we have both..
My guess is Polka dots
Roanna, I love your guess – I think you’re SPOT on!
I’m seeing 3 little *bumps?* So maybe 3 ice cream cones or 3 signs. Hope everybody had a great July 4th weekend.
Shark. Nothing says summer like shark week
Could it be a clown with the dots? There’s nothing connecting the dots and it looks like we might be making 2 more in the middle. If it was winter I would say it was snowballs. Or I might say a crown for a pageant but the dots aren’t connected but they could be in the lower part of the crown.
Greetings from Montreal. It’s been a long time since I have participated to this KAL.
I’m ready to jump in.
Happy knitting to all.
Paulette
Could it be cherries on a banana split ?
Hi all,
I am a newbie from Montreal.
I’m here to share my love of knitting in a KAL.
Thanks to Paulette, who invite me to join this group.
Happy knitting,
Ginette
How about a birthday cake commemorating a special day..
I think we might be looking at the tail end of a rocket ship as it’s blasting off, but then again, I have a lot of imagination and little to go by right now. 🙂
Welcome Ginette! You will find this to be a fun bunch!
Hmmmmmm… When I turn it upside down looks like candles…
Could it be waves crashing on the beach
Could it be a butterfly?
Welcome Ginette and welcome back Paulette!!
Thanks Karen H.
I like the thread here. Nice interaction between members.
It is fun and the project is not too demanding.
Glad to be back.
Paulette
Looking closer, is it fireworks & stars? I am new to this. It is fun guessing
Thank you Karen H.
I like it here. Just a nice challenge.
Could it be a peach tree with peaches on the ground?
Is it a firefly? Catching fireflies on a summer night!
How about the sweet sounds of Liberty from the Liberty Bell…this is the month for independence…
Thank you Elizabeth for your kind words. That’s new for me and I love it !
Is it a pine tree ?
C’est si bon for your brother!! That’s probably my french limit!
Karen H
(C’est si bon) It is so good !
That is good french, surely better than my poor english.
looking at it today and also thinking a butterfly.. not an early bird so Karen beat me to it..could change tho as we progress further..KAL is a fun thing to do and this is my third month..as a lifelong knitter and age 83 it is something I look forward to every day..
Is it a pier?
How do you call a flat qcar in a parade ? A float ?
A dune buggy
One of those little carts that sells ice creams or sells hot dogs at the beach or at a ball, game
A hang glider
A pelican
a ballerina
A Beach cabana, camping tent,
A dragonfly?
Is it a lawn sprinkler sending up water or a fountain or a water bubbler? Are those circles drops of water?
Ginette, your English is much better then my french because you can actually join in and not only read what we say but write back. It’s been over 40 years since I’ve been around french speaking people. My mom grew up in a french community in Massachusetts and all my relatives spoke french but I lived in Illinois all my life and was only around them 2 weeks out of the year. My mother didn’t teach any of us kids french so what I know I picked up during those 2 weeks visiting. I did take some french is high school and college but I don’t remember much at all. I suppose if I had to I could learn it easier now because I would start remembering it. I supposedly have some relatives living in Montreal but I only met them once back about 30 years ago.
Could it be a maple leaf?
Looking better it looks like a kite.
Looks like it could be a turtle or tortoise – or some other sea creature…then when I look another way it almost looks like a moth. Can’t decide. Thunderbird? Totem pole? Wait! Now it looks like a tree – like a pine tree! Sheesh…
Watching manta rays or fish in the ocean. Flower garden. I’m stumped!
Just a short note..I received the yarn and it is so pretty and soft to the touch..I shall make a scarf with it..Thank you Clare for this wonderful June prize….
So glad you like it!! I’ve had several customers make “Purless” by Romi Hill, with it, I’m tempted myself!
I think I have it..could it be the sea-turtles that have been coming ashore to lay their eggs…the reason for the recent shark attacks…
SO Close!
Is it an Air Force jet? At an air show?
how about Christmas in July? could it be a Christmas tree?
Fireworks, maybe a war tank.
How about a venus fly trap with 3 flies above it? See, Claire, we’re getting desperate for guesses!! You really have us stumped. It might be a simple knit and purl but it’s not a simple picture. You’re really making it difficult for us but then it also makes it fun reading all our guesses too!
How about 4 children doing an interpretive dance and throwing balls in the air??!! 🙂
Maybe a roller coaster like Cedar Point
Like AT Cedar Point I mean
A helicopter
An ultralite (plane)
A microlite
Ultralight
UFO
or flying saucer
I am going sticking with my original guess of a turtle – maybe a baby sea turtle hatching or swimming. Looks like a turtle head, part of the shell and flipper-like legs. Maybe the circles are air bubbles from it swimming…or are they more eggs???
Whoops! Typo – should say I am sticking (not I am going sticking) with my original guess of a turtle…
I have to say I was going to skip this month but after reading all your guesses I just have to jump in and catch myself up. Claire must have really outdone herself once again. I’m b
ack from a month in England, Scotland and Ireland – whew. What a great time I had. It was the trip of a life time for me and sure did pan out exactly as I expected it too. Connecting again with a long time friend across the pond was wonderful and exploring new things every day was way beyond my expectations. I fell in love with England, then Scotland, then Ireland and then England all over again. Sounds a tad fickle but still…. it really was an experience to be treasured. Good to be back though too – there is knitting to be gotten to !
hm, I’m starting to see froggy feet. So much for my rocketship idea!
Maybe it’s a crab as the sign for July?
I’m believing either a turtle or a crab…so we’ll see down the line, as they say crab meat is sweet tasting..so that could just be also…hmmm…
No matter how far we roam ..there’s no place quite like home…Welcome Back Betty!
Hi Claire, I am new on this site. I belong to a knitting group and two of my friends shared this site with me yesterday. I was so excited to see their work and they did not know where they were going, hahahaha. So I will start the knitting and also will try to guess what the pattern is. Can’t wait to start. This is so fun.
Hi Janine,
Glad you are playing with us. Cant wait to see your disclotch, next sunday !
how about a seal or sea lion (I don’t know the difference)? Do they have those in North Carolina??
Welcome Janine. The more the merrier.
Another knitting subject to talk about when we gather on Sundays.
Thanks Paulette, so glad so talked about this site last Sunday. This is so much fun!!!
Can it be a parasail or water skiing
Eureka! It is a sea star.
Eureka! It is a sea star or starfish.
A beach bike
A boat trailer
a frog
Is it a sandcastle
I’m very tired today but very happy because my new baby granddaughter was born very late last night. Hopefully I can go see her after dinner tonight and count all the fingers and toes…hahaha!! Technology is so wonderful because my son sent a picture of her right away in a text.
No new guesses because my brain isn’t working right now but I did want to welcome Janine also!!
Wonderful News! Congratulations!
Congratulations to the parents and grandparents and Happy birthday to the new baby girl.
Karen H. Congratulations on the arrival of your new granddaughter. Welcome to all the new fans of Claire’s great site. Betty. I am so glad that you enjoyed your visit to England, Scotland and Ireland. July has been a rather hectic month so far and I am just catching up with the rows and reading every ones comments. I am wondering if it is the turtle and the snail.
Or should it be tortoise?
Karen H..Congratulations of the new baby girl…and Welcome to Janine, I’m sure you’ll love this site and group..happy guessing!
Congratulations Karen H for the new girl in your family .
Maybe it is a sea turtle or tortoise swimming – and the circles are air bubbles…
Looks like a fish!
Just looked at it again, looks like a bird in water.
Ninja Turttle
Seems to be a dragonfly or bird from a birds eye view.
Another thought. How about the tortoise and the hare.
Sand dollar ?
Maybe a lighthouse?
I am back for another mystery cloth. I think it is a strawberry, upside down for now.
You might be right. It looks like a straberry, upside down.
Thanks everyone for the congrats! I get to spend this afternoon with my new little one. I’m very excited. I’m still very puzzled by what this cloth is! Will we ever guess correctly?
Claire you’ve told us that people have guessed correctly on some cloths right from the beginning but what is the longest it’s taken for someone to get the correct guess. Maybe this one???
I am going out on a limb and guess an “angel”..I’m in an angelic mood…
I was wondering about a barbecue grill, steamer or a smoker with three wheels
Sea turtle babies going to the sea to swim after hatching?
Now I’m leaning toward a Flounder!!! Or perhaps I’m thinking of my next summer dinner…
Talking about next meal : how about a big juicy tomato ?
To me it looks like a frog or toad or a baby frog but not a tadpol. I can see a big juicy tomato too Paulette! It just depends on which way I turn it. Talk of food is making me hungry so I’d better feed myself!
How about a horseshoe crab?
How about a fire pit?
A hot air balloon!
A playful dolphin…or a manatee…they’re both playful and sweet
Hi jonibee Did you find the Aug, RMT? if so could you let me know how to find it. Thank you.
A hydrofoil
A fanboat
An airboat
A saltwater frog?
Per my research the following can tolerate salt water: Indian bull frog, European common frog, European marsh frog, leopard frog (of the USA), European green toad, Natterjack toad, African clawed frog, & South American marine toad, to name a few. Ya learn something every day! 😉
A pineapple ?
could it be a stingray? not for sure what one looks like.
Betty H
A clam with pearls
Whew – I finally caught up and… I’m thinking along the lines of guesses already made which makes me feel comfortable. I see your rocket Karen, also Jonibee’s turtle and even the angel – none of these? Really Claire?? Oh well, at least I’m in the same ball park.
Wishing the newest members a warm welcome with the hope that you enjoy the knit as much as i do. I’ve never guessed one yet but sure like seeing the imagination in the guesses and LOVE having a completed dish cloth each month.
Karen – big congrats ! Grand babies are such special gifts I think and for grand parents lucky enough to see them often, well, that’s a double blessing.
I’m thinking it could be a sweet fruit like peaches, paw-paw, passion fruit or sassafras that is used in a tea…that may be grown in either SC or NC..I think the clue of the SE part of each state threw us off to thinking about the ocean..
could it be a glider plane or maybe the Dinosaur bird( terradoctyle) ? Something like that.It is amazing Claire how you keep us guessing.Thank you for the beautiful yarn.It arrived today. Loving all the replies and all remarks from everyone.
Annbeth
I had surgery on my left hand on 6/30 so knitting is not an option for a while. But I love the monthly dish cloth adventure, so I have been typing out the pattern on the computer. And I have absolutely no clue what this will turn out to be!
A penguin
If not some sort of turtle, maybe an aquatic frog of some sort or a bullfrog.
Owl
I can’t believe I might be actually knitting this, but it looks like a bug to me, like a tick, or cicada, or even a flea!
A donkey.
is it a woman/girl in a cotillion dress?
is it a crab, zodiac sign for July
maybe a lobster?
I guess I’m thinking a Sea Turtle.
It looks like a lotus blossom!
A dodgem car
A mosquito or a fly
Nenuphar
A tea pot
A whimsical guess it almost looks like an elephant .. looking for peanuts..(wrong state) ha…
Hummm could it be a kite?
My guess is an eagle
an owl
How about a strawberry with blueberries across the top? Both are NC state berries.
It’s a frog!
A frog
I agree…a frog.
A beach cabana..I can’t believe all the things that I have thought it resembles on this cloth..very perplexing…but fun to look forward for the next days clue….
and he’s grinning ear to ear at us
(to think my first thought was a rocket – love to see him jump!)
very fitting as we have a toad living just outside our door and we say hello to him every time we head to the car and he’s enjoying the porch. 😉
I’m guessing this is a Liberty Bell.
How about a rabbit or bunny? Or a chipmunk? The 3 dots on the bottom puzzle me but if it’s a chipmunk those could be nuts.
or even a squirrel?
A hot air balloon?
or a cat with 3 balls of yarn?
An Edison lightbulb?
A baseball mitt ?
A frog with egg clutch…
The three balls/bubbles/dots puzzle me a lot no matter if I look at them upright or upside down. What are they ? Two of them are not connected. Strange!
A duck bus
how about a manta ray?
annbeth
Ok – I finally got it !! Yea ! At least I think I have it. I’ve turned it around, upside down, sideways – in both directions and it finally popped out at me. Whew… Claire this was reeeealy a great design . In my eyes it’s traveled from a flower, to candles on a table, to a rocket to the liberty bell, to the fat lady at the circus to… a frog ! (knock knock) – tis a shame the person who will get this cloth can’t possibly have the same pleasure of it’s knitting that I’ve had. This one will definitely be a second and third knit – one for my Texan, Emily, and one for me ! Thanks Claire There are several rows to go but I’m going out on a … lily … it’s going to stay a frog.
I agree it definately looks like a frog especially the legs..a smiling one too…This month was a real guessing game for me…
How about a lion? The circus sometimes comes in the summer…
Boy, Claire, this month should have given you enough ideas with our guesses to last years! I also agree, a frog.
Looks like a bat flying!
I had to look up the difference between a frog and a toad..the frog has longer legs to leap and a toad usually walks..plus a toad has venomous glands..ugh….A frog likes dampness and a toad likes it dry…atleast I got some info about amphibians…
I think it’s nice that we not only get a lot of fun knitting these cloths but we get an education out of it too! I didn’t know that about the frogs and toads. Thanks, Jonibee! Each month we seem to get some kind of trivia related to our cloths. I still would like to know what those 3 dots are on the bottom.
I think it is a trick for us to guess what they are. I think they are a decoration. We might have a sneaky teacher (hihi). Guess we will have to wait for the big result.
It’s a big fat frog with a smile on its face.
A bullfrog
I maintain my first impression that it is a frog smiling at us !
This frog is not only smiling at us Ginette, he is laughing at us.
A lotus flower?
A frog sitting on a lily pad
Hope we get all the other rows once we know who the famous knitter is.
Didn’t Ginette guess it first?
Sue, I agree with you.
Nancy, Congratulations! I am sure that you will enjoy the beautiful bag. Claire I hope that you and your family have a wonderful vacation. You deserve it and I hope that you all have a wonderful time. I look forward to August 2.
Frog was mentioned first on July 14 by Ginette:

It’s a frog!
I think the prize should be awarded to Ginette since she guessed it first.
I thought Ginette said it on the 14.
Yes, I also thought that I was the first one ,on july the 14, guessing that it was a frog.
I am so sorry Ginette, I must have overlooked your guess so of course you are the winner and I will happily send you a bag too! When I signed off last night, I said to my husband, I think I got through a whole month without any screwups or typos! Guess I spoke to soon!
Yep – you guys are correct… it was Ginette on the 14th. Claire was enduring a horrible migraine last night and I’m sure her eyes weren’t working up to par. She still had the headache today in the shop and is probably catching up on some needed sleep tonight but I’m sure she will correct the error. Congratulations Ginette and to everyone who saw the frog before me – I’m just thankful it popped out for me before we reached row 60 !
Claire, have a safe and nice vacation with your family. We’ll see you on August 2nd.
Have fun !
I too thought that Ginette had won and was surprised..perhaps when the winner is chosen the date of the correct guess should be also shown…Congratulations to Ginette…Claire have a nice vacation with your family..a well deserved one.
