Riddle Me This, May 2014

Riddle Me This, May 2014

Hey, hey, hey, it’s MAY!  Warmer temps often mean we need smaller, lighter things to knit, and what could be more perfect than another dishcloth?  (I’m just sayin’)   We’ve got a cute one for you this month,  just knits and purls, easy as pie!  I’m not giving any hints to the theme this month, but any color will work just fine!  Welcome back to all the girls and we love newbies as well, the comments are for guesses, as always, but also to ‘chat’ together!  Enjoy!

P1020477

How it works –

Come back to THIS post every day through May, and I’ll add two additional rows  to the pattern, listing the new rows under the date they are posted.  Don’t worry if you miss a day, I will just add the rows, never remove them.     **You may find it helpful to bookmark thedomesticdash.com, so you can find your way back!**

Use any worsted weight cotton yarn you like, (but a solid color will show up the design better).

Knit so that you create a ‘firm’ fabric, to really show off the relief stitches.  The tighter you knit the cloth, the more the design will POP!  For most of you, this will be a size 7 needle.  If you like a smaller dishcloth try using a dk weight cotton and a size 5 needle.

Just for fun, if/when you have a guess as to the design, leave a comment, the FIRST person to make an exact guess will win a prize from The Quarter Stitch in Wilmington, NC!

Cast on 41 stitches.

Row 1- *(K1, P1), repeat from * across, end with a K1.

I enjoyed using the Peaches and Creme for my last months dishcloth. I do think the solid colors show the picture so much better.

I have a suggestion on next months riddle dishcloth why not on the first day give all the border info like rows 1,2,3, then the second day we can get right down to business and start the mystery design..then on the last day end with the border rows again..of course this is your project so you have the final say…just a thought.

I did not choose a sunny yellow since I am in the “Super Sunny” west coast. I chose a nice soft lavender that makes me think of spring. When I think of Spring, I think of Mother’s Day and the things that go with it like flowers. I am going to make a guess it could be a flower like a daisy, rose or daffodil. I think of daisies and daffodil’s because they are a sign of spring and roses for moms.

I really enjoy knitting up a surprise every month…like a little bit of Christmas every month. I almost picked up the yellow cotton but then my arm was overcome with a supernatural power and picked up a color called “hot green” by Sugar ‘n Cream. Not as bright as a lime green but it reminded me of a spring color anyway. Can anyone tell me what they are doing with the little bits of cotton yarn that is left over after our washcloths are finished? Happy May Knitting, everyone!

    Cindy MB,

I do a couple of things of things with my leftover scraps depending on their size. If I don’t have very much, I cut them up into about 4-6 in. lengths and put them in a open basket or suet feeder for birds to use as nesting materials. If I have a good size (1/4 to 1/2 skein) I knit them up into the diagonal dishcloth for myself. Birds seem to like the lighter, brighter colors best.

CindyMB – I usually keep scraps for embroidering details onto knit/crocheted toys, but if they’re big enough I’ve thought of making another cloth with them and just having random color changes to make stripes.

Love this new washcloth! We are having a Family Reunion this summer and I am knitting washcloths for all the women. I am tucking soap, made right here in New Hampshire, inside and tying it up with ribbon and a tag. On the tag, I am writing why I chose the particular design for that person. This one will definitely go to my mom. I have a total of 18 washcloths to knit but they knit up pretty quickly. Thanks, Claire! And after the reunion, I get to actually make one for myself! Can’t wait!
