Riddle Me This, March 2014

Riddle Me This, March 2014

March, it’s a month, it’s a command, forward.  So here we go again, time for a new dishcloth KAL!  This one has been designed by the ‘queen’, it is a simple knit and purl design, no fancy stitches, no special skills required.  Welcome back to all the regulars, and if you are new here welcome!  You can click the ‘pattern’ button on the top of this page to see some of our past designs, and of course links to the patterns.

P1020477

How it works -

Come back to THIS post every day through March, and I’ll add two additional rows  to the pattern, listing the new rows under the date they are posted.  Don’t worry if you miss a day, I will just add the rows, never remove them.     **You may find it helpful to bookmark thedomesticdash.com, so you can find your way back!**

Use any worsted weight cotton yarn you like, (but a solid color will show up the design better).

Knit so that you create a ‘firm’ fabric, to really show off the relief stitches.  For most of you, this will be a size 7 needle.  If you like a smaller dishcloth try using a dk weight cotton and a size 5 needle.

Just for fun, if/when you have a guess as to the design, leave a comment, the FIRST person to make an exact guess will win a prize from The Quarter Stitch in Wilmington, NC!

Cast on 41 stitches.

Row 1- *(K1, P1) repeat from * across row, ending with a K1.

Row 2-  *(K1, P1) repeat from * across row, ending with a K1.

Guessing an Easter basket! Because it’s so obvious from the first two rows – LOL! Thanks for the KAL.

How about a rainbow and pot of gold or leprechaun or shamrock. Of course it could be an Easter bunny. There are so many choices it is going to be very difficult to guess. The first two rows are not exactly a give away.

I am sure my comment will upset some but I hope most understand. When I first did one of these it seemed everyone worked on it and waited till it started taking shape before saying what it looked liked. Now everyone just starts naming off things it could be the first day. That does seem to be how the winners are winning but for me it has lost the fun.

I understand where you’re coming from..and perhaps we should have a date that Cheryl opens up the site for the guess..that way everyone would have an equal chance of guessing ..my question is should it be one guess only or multiple of course this would be up to Cheryl. I hope that you will continue and enjoy the quest just for your own enjoyment..hopefully you too will have the honour of being a winner down the line too.

I just like doing the project. I do agree that there should be a date to start guessing and that it should be only one guess per post. This will open the winning to more people. Thank you for the wonderful designs, I will keep knitting regardless.

I agree with Vicki and second the suggestion of jonibee to set a date to open for suggestions, even the possibility of one guess per person per day. I only started in January and I am really enjoying knitting and wondering where this is taking us, but we truly don’t have much of a chance to make a legitimate guess after only two rows. Thank you again Claire for your effort to make this fun for all of us!

I think this has been a lot of fun. This will be my fifth KAL here. Half of the fun is guessing. When, how many, how often is half of the fun. It’s fun watching the early guesses change as the dish cloth moves along. I had to did out my cotton yarn and I am SO glad I did. It’s been fun adding to my dish cloth “collection” I have learned more than a new stitch or two, I have also learned alot about how to read a pattern. and how to read a repeat.Keep the KAL’s coming Claire

i have done the KAL since december and look forward to them.
i have a cone of the cotton yarn that am using for all the dishclothes, so they will all match my kitchen when am done , no matter what they turn out 2 b.

good morning everyone..it’s supposed to hit 70 here today in anderson,sc..cant wait..so ready for the warm weather..me personally,i think it’s too early to guess.we have only done the border stitches..i love the kal and will continue as long as claire puts it up..not in it so much for the prize,it is a nice incentive..but how many would continue if there weren’t any prize..i would, because i think we have our own little group of friends here..trying to solve a mystery,of course.lol..but we all communicate with another daily on other things..if none other than just saying hello to everyone.but i am saving my cloths for christmas gifts.maybe i should be making 2 of them..one for me and one for someone else..lol..have a good day everyone..love the kal claire..

Good morning all… it’s me sitting at the computer in NC with needles ready to start this month’s knit. After reading the comments I’d like to add that I too think the guessing is fun and gets your imagination flowing and sparks come chit chat along the way – all good things. I certainly have enjoyed the read as much as the knit. There is a learning curve to this, as in anything worth doing, and I know Claire is up to it. Her suggestion that the guess has to be exact is spot on. It allows for everyone to play around with guesses at the start for fun but as the knitting progresses, makes for a challenge to redefine what you think the cloth will be. Since know one knows exactly what the theme or components of the cloth will be, guessing correctly at the beginning would really be a lucky guess, So…. the design for the “Heart Box of Candy” would have been a tricky one. I believe that was guessed on the first day – but lacked the X’s. BTW if any of you chose to knit the heart and you are on a diet, feel free to leave out the bobbles (candy) and just knit that stitch instead. : ) oh shoot, now I forgot what my guess is… on well, happy knitting everyone.

I have to agree with you Karen. I would continue the KAL and guessing even if there was no prize. I am here for the fun and meeting new people and the comments and conversation. I am totally enjoying these and I look forward to each new month to make new dishcloths. I am in need of some and was going to knit the standard diagonal dishcloth, but this is way more fun. I also gives me interesting dish cloths when I am done. Claire (and Betty) please keep the fun coming!

    Claire,
A very unrelated question to this months KAL. Your Dec. dishcloth with the sheep appears to be knitted in a gray colored yarn. Do you know the brand? Am able to buy Sugar and Cream and Peaches and Cream in this area but cannot find the color gray in either brand. Am interested in that color and wondering which brand the color is in. Thanks for your help. Noreen

Ellie, I highlight the two rows each day and paste them onto a word document. This helps me two ways. 1) If I miss a day, I know exactly where I left off. 2)I can copy them and then when I am knitting a row with a lot of changes, I can follow what I am doing with the cursor. Another thing I do that I find to help me is …. when I copy to the word doc, I copy in black. Then as I finish a row or part of a row, I change to a different color like red or a medium blue.

I’m not guessing today, but I have a couple of fun thoughts – with all the wild guessing we’ve had on these KALs, the design team could just compile a list of future ideas and never run out! Also, I still think it’d be funny if we found out at the end that the clues were giving us the pattern upside down (working top down instead of bottom up) or even sideways, though that’s a bit trickier to work through sometimes, just because it makes the image that much more difficult to guess. So – in that vein, if we’re working upside down (I’m sure we’re not, but what fun to imagine) – I think we have a beautiful fountain right now!

I am sorry that I made the comment earlier cause now it seems like everyone thinks I am just in it to win something. That is far from the case. I am doing two CALs that have no “prize” other than the finished project. I have been enjoying this dishcloth very much and have not made any guesses. I still read what everyone else is guessing and then try to figure out how you all see that in the cloth. Today I decided to make a guess cause I finally saw something. I think it is a bunny sitting down with his/her large back feet facing us.

I’m sorry if anything I said made you feel that way. I won the prize in Jan for my first day guess of 2014. I guess that and then promptly forgot about it and couldn’ see the 2014 until I saw guessing that. Then I was scrolling through the comments to try and guess the winner. I never scrolled back to the very beginning because I forgot I had even made a guess. I was having so much fun knitting and trying to figure it out that by the time I did… someone else had guessed. I love the KAL each month. It’s a fun break from my “regular” knitting. You know……. the socks, the scarf, all those baby hats and booties, baby blankets….Please don’t worry about it. Just keep coming back and enjoying the fun!

It looks like one side is a frog and upside down it reminds me of a baby lamb or a cat or lions head, its hard to tell because when you include the outer corners it reminds me of the lion in wizard of oz. Fun looking for shapes in this cloth. Keeps us guessing like a puzzle. The prince frog with a crown. Still looks like a frog right side up. Having fun knitting on these rainy days just a couple more days and the sun is coming out! Yeah! Just looking forward to getting out bike riding and walks on the beach. Happy Spring! Working on a beautiful shawl. Thanks quarter stitch for all your beautiful yarn and inspiring projects. Looking forward to many more challenges, like trying new things.

Hmmm… Looks like it could be the face of a baby duck or baby chick head on. Or maybe an adult duck or chicken! Looks like two eyes, a beak and now the comb of a chicken or top of a duck head. So fun. Cannot wait for the next few rows. First thing I do each morning is look for the next two rows. Thanks Claire! You give me purpose – lol!

I still think It’s a floppy eared bunny, but I’m adding that bunny’s wearing a bow tie or maybe a jacket or both bowtie and jacket. Maybe a shamrock added to either the jacket or bowtie or maybe in a corner to depict St. Patrick’s day.

Ouch Karen… I’m super allergic to poison ivy (and oak) . That stuff is no joke. The last time I had it here I went into a full panic and my neighbor suggested Tecnu and some CalaGel. It has been my go to ever since. The The first removed the oil and stopped it from spreading and the second stopped the itch and weeping – just dried it up . Whew – a real lifesaver for me ! you can get them both at Wal-Mart.

Happy Anniversary ! Ours is today so I’m fixing something special for Dick’s dinner tonight. We have ten years on you…. and still hanging in here : )

        Heather Thomas March 26, 2014 at 9:01 am | | Reply

        TecNu works wonderfully.
My brother found another solution – Fast Orange (kinda like a pumice soap for cleaning hands etc after working on cars and other greasy stuff) – if you can stand the roughness, it helps remove all of the oil – which is what makes you react and itch – and dry everything up. Cleared his up and prevented days of itching. I haven’t personally tried that one yet.

I hope you clear up soon Karen – poison ivy itchiness is no fun at all.
